| In 1980 the roll-on roll-off ferry Zenobia with her cargo of articulated lorries got into difficulties near Cyprus. A computerised system which controlled the ballast tanks malfunctioned so that the ship developed a list. Initially, the fault was corrected and the ship was brought upright, but further trimming was necessary. She listed again to port, her cargo shifted and on 7 June 1980 the Zenobia was allowed to sink 1.5 kilometres offshore from Larnaca harbour. |
| The lorries on the open deck had been lashed down with chains but as the ship sank they toppled sideways. Now, at 40 metres depth, you can still see the lorries, some suspended upside down by their chains. However, close inspection is dangerous as the chains are weakened with corrosion and could give way at any time. From the air on a very calm, clear day as your plane approaches Larnaca airport, you may see the Zenobia lying on the seabed. |
